Ube Pancakes at YogurStory are a must!

So you made it to Oahu and you look up places or food you have to eat. One word that keeps popping up is ube.

Ube ice cream, ube teas but one of the popular ones is ube pancakes. So I ask my best friend who has been living in Hawaii for almost two years what she recommends. “Definitely go to YogurStory and have their ube pancakes!” she immediately responds. So I look it up and see where it is located on Oahu, making plans to go over for breakfast.

One thing I picked up immediately when I was in Oahu is that traffic into Honolulu starts early. I’m used to San Diego times so imagine my surprise when here the traffic starts at 6 am!!! So I give myself a little extra time and head into traffic the next morning to try some ube pancakes for the first time.

After a 35 minute drive, I find the restaurant and park. I get there an hour after they open which is probably why there was still parking. The lot was almost full so plan ahead and look out for street parking if you want to get breakfast after 8am.

From the outside it doesn’t look impressive. Just a big building with some outdoor seating that is their waiting area. I walked inside and I was really impressed with the decor. It’s like night and day when you compare the inside and outside. Everything was so bright and lovely. There were already many tables full and it looked like they were already opening up their upstairs seating area to accommodate more people. After getting my table, I just sat and took in the whole area.

Next on the agenda were drinks! I didn’t really look at the menu because my breakfast go to is always either regular coffee or a latte. This time I wanted to splurge so latte it was.

The waiter came over and he was so nice and attentive (I think his name was John or James. I’m so sorry I forgot your name but he was so sweet and welcoming!). When he heard latte he suggested some of their specialty lattes. I got really excited and could not decide between Green Tea Latte and a Taro Latte. In the end I chose Taro since I had never tasted it before.

Now Taro is completely different to Ube. Yes they are both purple in color but they are different plants. Ube from what I have researched is a purple yam while Taro is a root with a very little purple, almost lilac. From the first sip you get a blast of sweetness, so those who have a major sweet tooth will find this is the drink for them. It was tasty but I prefer my coffee bitter so I was only able to drink half of the cup! All of their mugs have this cute happy face on it which goes with the decor of YogurStory.

Then came the main event! My Ube Pancakes!!!!

They were dark purple and smothered in Ube! For some reason I thought it was only the batter that was going to be Ube so this was an exciting surprise. Another was the taste. After trying the Taro latte sweetness bomb, I was a little worried that my taste buds were going to be saturated with even more sugar. To my relief and happiness, the Ube was only mildly sweet. It tasted more like a nutty flavor. A perfect blend to slowly soak my pancakes with.

No your teeth don’t purple which is another bonus. All you need to bring is an empty belly because the pancakes alone are very filling.

The staff like I said were very hospitable. They have other items on the menu but you can’t go wrong with these yummy pancakes!
